If you can't stand the heat...

Raising and breeding alpacas was Austin’s idea. A classically trained chef, Austin was in the restaurant business for almost 15 years. Realizing that he didn’t want to spend the rest of his professional life in the kitchen, Austin began researching other ways of making a living. He liked the idea of raising alpacas not only because they are gentle, lovable animals that are easy to care for, but also because he wanted to be his own boss and see the fruits of his labor grow – in size, number, and quality.

Austin’s enthusiasm was contagious, and it wasn’t long before his idea became a family affair. We spent many months visiting other farms, researching the industry, attending seminars, developing a business plan, acquiring premier female alpacas, entering shows and building a web site. And then, we made the leap.

Don was a corporate creature most of his adult life, and Sharon was a small-business owner. We enjoyed our careers, but we wanted new challenges and new opportunities in the next phase of our lives. (See The Lifestyle.)

So what (besides Austin) led us to alpacas?

Well, for starters, they’re cute, cuddly, gentle, sweet, comical and huggable – in a word, irresistible. We also liked the prospect of doing something different, fun and rewarding. And the fact that breeding alpacas can be a family enterprise – allowing us to work with the people we like the most – was the icing on the cake.

Today our primary business is raising and breeding alpacas, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
